THE REGION

The Douro River is the heart and soul of this region.

Considered for decades as indomitable, due to its strong currents, sharp curves and violent flows, Douro is a river which rises in Spain in the province of Soria, on the peaks of the Sierra de Urbion, at 2080 meters of altitude and crosses the north of Portugal. Douro has 927 km long and is the third longest river on the Iberian Peninsula.

The course of Douro marked the history of the region, because their waters bathe the Douro Valley, where they grow the grapes harvested for Port Wine traditionally transported through the river.

On December 14, 2001, UNESCO included the Alto Douro Wine Region on the list of places that are World Heritage Site, in the category of Cultural Landscape.

The Douro River is now a quiet and tranquil place where nature, landscape, crafts, cookery, but especially the unique eno-tourism attracts thousands of visitors annually, representing a major impact on the local economy. The Douro River continues to be the engine of this region.
